EXPERIENCE

University of Washington Geophysics

Postdoctoral Research Associate 1999-present
Polar Satellite Program . Combining microscopic plasma data from FAST with global auroral images from the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) instrument.
UC Berkeley Space Sciences Lab Postdoctoral Research Associate 1996-1999
FAST Satellite Program . Developed an automated algorithm for the detection of field-aligned currents at multiple scales. Implemented automatic summary plot generation for the FAST data stream. Wrote many general-purpose utilities for use by FAST Co-Investigators.
University of New Hampshire Graduate Research Assistant 1990-1996
Auroral Turbulence Sounding Rocket Program. Focused on the correlation of Alfven and EMIC modes to parallel electron flux modulations. Calibrated and integrated particle instruments at Wallops, and performed silvering and final alignment for first flight of Faraday Ring Ammeter. Attended launch preparations and assisted in launch decision at Poker Flat.
Soliton Sounding Rocket Program. Focused on the anomalous heating of ions by the Arecibo ISR, and the generation of 10-meter irregularites and convection electric fields by the HF heater. Developed appropriate deconvolution methods to extract the bulk plasma parameters from electrostatic analyzers with broad overlapping response functions. Developed a method relating fluctuations in successive particle detector samples to the correlation length for density fluctuations. Developed an improved automated detector calibration system which allows the sampling of detector response functions for use in inverse deconvolution methods. Attended integration at Wallops, and final preparations and launch in Puerto Rico. Supported by a NASA GSRP award, 1992-1995.
University of New Hampshire Graduate Teaching Assistant 1989-1990
Lab instructor for second semester freshman physics in the fall, and junior level electronics for physics majors in the spring.
University of Minnesota Space Science Junior Scientist 1987-1989
ARCS4 Sounding Rocket Program. Supervised and participated in the construction, calibration and integration of subpayload wave instruments (sensors and electronics). Redesigned, built and tested an Argon Plasma Generator, and associated electronics, for flight.
University of Minnesota Space Science Undergrad Research Assistant 1985-1987
ARCS3 Sounding Rocket Program. Assisted in the reduction of DC and HF electric field, photometer and density probe data.
DE-2 Satellite Program. Participated in a study searching for Pc-1 pulsations observed simultaneously at DE and at various polar magnetometer stations.
